It’s another Mother’s Day during the pandemic and another time of the year to start thinking about what to get mom. It was a little challenging to make this list because I wanted to also take into account that many people (myself included) don’t want to spend too much during this uncertain time, but I also wanted to try and highlight local/small businesses to ease people’s minds about shipping/delivery time, etc. I hope this helps!
The first step I always take when I start choosing items to get my mom is to go on a run-through of stuff she has, things she already bought and things I know she doesn’t like. Personally, I almost always get my mom food or skincare for Mother’s Day. She usually gets things she needs and she rarely ever spends extra on herself and often gets angry if I get her little stuff like room decor.
I’ve always seen lists and lists of Mother’s Day gift guides where close to everything is touching decor or etc. and I know I’m probably not the only one whose mom is a little choosy about gifts and etc. The list I’ve created reflects what I would personally get my mom with other options thrown in, so I hope this helps!

Skincare
Skincare, I find, is one of the easiest choices for me to gift to my mom. I’m pretty much open to trying products but I’m a lot pickier when it comes to choosing skincare products for my mom. I do try to choose the best in name, price and effectiveness but as always, what works for my mom or I’s skin may not work as well for yours. It’s always best to keep that in mind and know what your skin needs.
First up, for anyone looking into getting sets/gift sets for your mom. I would recommend Tony Moly’s Wonder Ceramide Mochi Set, this can be found on BamBeau’s website here. Bambeau is a small business that sells Korean and Japanese skincare products, and also does special orders. I think the set is pretty basic and comes with a toner, cleanser and cream for $27 CAD. It’s a great starter set, and affordable too.
However, for those looking for a specialized product to give to mom. Missha’s Night Repair Probio Ampoule is a great choice! A lot of small businesses actually carry this product (it’s highly raved about) and you can find it on Missha Canada’s site as well. However, I would recommend purchasing this from Skin TO because they have the best price for this. Not to mention, you’ll also be supporting another small business! You can get it/view it here.
Food
Food is a little trickier to get for my mom, I can always get her ice cream cake but I like getting her a variety of stuff to try. There’s also a matter of preference and taste too, I’ve got a sweet tooth and my mom is the typical mother who prefers not-so-sweet treats. I was lucky enough to get to know some small businesses (by checking their Instagram and Facebook pages) so I knew what to do this year.
The Cheese Garden has a Sakura Spring collection that consists of one cup, one cake and two pieces of sakura yakigashi. It retails for $39.95 + tax, and you’ll have to pre-order it for pickup or delivery. There’s still time to pre-order the sets, but certain dates are all sold out (the day of and the day before Mother’s Day). You can check it out on their website here.
Maybe Sakura flowers aren’t for your mom, well how about roses? Daan Go Cake Lab has a seasonal Mother’s Day Cake called ‘Deer Mom’ available to be ordered, it’s about $45 CAD and consists of rose mousse, lychee gel, almond sponge and raspberry meringue. Had I not been able to order the sakura set from The Cheese Garden, I would have likely ordered this. Check this cake out here. Alternately, they also have a durian cake called ‘Gold Thorn’ ranging from $42-$65 if your mom prefers durian.
Last but not least, maybe your mom would prefer something smaller but just as tasty! Well, Isabella’s Mochi Donuts has special flavours for Mother’s Day; Hibiscus, Sakura Cherry Blossom, Butterfly Pea Flower-Lavender, Lady Grey, Matcha Red Bean Buttercream and Strawberry Shortcake.
I didn’t try these particular flavours but their mochi donuts are something you need to try at least once. It’s got a first-bite donut texture but has the characteristic mochi bounce, the more you chew. The sweetness ranges for each flavour, but you can bet that there’s that special “not too sweet” one for mom.
Flowers
I honestly cannot forget to mention flowers, because for years when I was a broke young student I would beg my dad for some pocket money to buy my mom flowers. My old elementary school would host a Mother’s Day sale, and I always ended up buying flowers in old little teacups or just random things to bring home. I remember that fondly, but let’s upgrade it!
Pang Balloon is a small business that sells flower arrangements kinda inside a balloon. You’ve probably seen this all over social media, but they look absolutely beautiful. You can get it as a bouquet or as part of a vase/box, so just go to their Instagram here to learn more about the styles they offer. I’m pretty sure their products range from $65-$75, it’s a little out of budget for me this year but they look amazing!
Of course, you can also go to a local flower shop to get mom some flowers. For those living downtown, I would recommend Tiny Flower on Bay Street. I had reached out to them asking if they sold a certain type of flower back in Fall, however, I got off work right as they closed that day.
