As a usual start-off for this review series, I received these products as part of the Try Me Review Me program over at StyleKorean. This series is focused on the K-Beauty brand, Skinfood. The product I’m trying and reviewing in this post is the Royal Honey Propolis Enrich Essence.
As usual, Skinfood was one of the founding brands in my Korean Skincare journey many years ago and it’s really exciting being able to try out some of their infamous products. Some of them have been on my wishlist, and some (like this) are entirely new to me!
Based on some research, this essence is mainly made from black bee propolis extract (63%), royal jelly extract (10%) and black honey extract (10%). The essence claims to strengthen the skin barrier, replenish the moisture in your skin and also help make your skin radiant.
Right off the bat, the glass bottle looks really nice and luxurious. However, I’m not convinced that it’s travel-friendly. The cap is one of those pop-up droppers, where the dropper will pop out of the case with the first initial twist. However, it seems a little flimsy to me and I would worry about it in a makeup bag. Aside from that, everything looks fine.
One really big bonus for the product, in my opinion, is the scent. There’s no overly sweet honey smell to this, in fact, I don’t think there’s a scent to the essence at all! Normally honey-based products have an overwhelming sweet-honey smell to them, and it irritates my nose and my eyes almost 90% of the time. This essence doesn’t even seem to have a scent so I’ll say it’s friendly to those who want something scent-free.
The dropper is a little difficult to use I’ll be honest, and I have to drop the product onto the back of my hand instead of onto my face. Its kind of like, the dropper is hard to push down in certain positions and I don’t want to end up touching the dropper itself to my skin.
Now, the essence itself is clear and pretty serum-like. Not like the watery-essence that I’m usually used to, so it was weird the first time I applied it. It spreads smoothly and will kind of sit on your skin for a few seconds, giving you time to spread it evenly, before it sinks into your skin. It’s not tacky or oily, but when touching it, you’ll feel that you clearly put some sort of moisturizing product on.
I’m not quite sure how to show the product improving my skin barrier, but I think that’s something you’ll just notice one day after using this for a while. I’m only a few weeks in so I doubt there are visible differences yet, but the moisturization factor is there. I think this product is the perfect moisturization level for people with normal-oily combination skin, because it’s not super heavy (but not weightless either) on your skin even when layered with other products.
Overall, yes I do recommend the product and while your mileage may vary with this, it worked really well for me. I do think that the cap and dropper are what you’ll need to be careful about, but it’s not like it’s going to break when you use it. Either way, the product itself in the bottle is worth working around the cap.
